Healing Generational Pain through Film with Lily Soleil Correa Lewites

show notes

How do you heal your generational trauma?

In the latest episode of Ellas, Lily Soleil Correa Lewites is a multifaceted creative who doesn’t allow herself to be boxed in. Through a broader perspective, Lily started the path to heal her generational trauma through film.

She began filming her documentary The Sun and Everything. Her documentary is a letter of solidarity and a step toward healing from painful familial and historical wounds brought by the bloody end of the Somoza dictatorship in the early 1980s. A history filled with the loss of loved ones, political asylum, and democratic war efforts across three generations of relatives.

Lily is a professional photographer, model, makeup artist, and recent graduate from the University of California Irvine where she studies film and media with an emphasis on digital filmmaking.

In this inspiring conversation, I talked with the Nicaraguan-American multifaceted creative about her passion for her country’s history and expanding Nicaragua’s reach in the art and film realm. We also cover living a divided life between her Nicaraguan and American identity and combining these two personas to create more meaningful work.

Lily refers to this project to pave her path as an activist, an artist, a woman, a fighter, and a descendent of a long line of justice seekers. In the end, she hopes this film can fossilize a powerful moment in history and can offer her family an opportunity to heal from the pain of politics and power.

Listen to this powerful episode to discover how Lily’s passions have been able to heal her generational pain while providing representation to Nicaraguans.
